An Electrical Grid Under Solar Power
In Tahiti, at the heart of French Polynesia, the increasing integration of solar farms into the energy mix represents a major challenge for the stability of the grid managed by TEP | Polynesian Electricity Transport. The tropical climate, characterized by high meteorological variability, poses complex challenges in terms of forecasting and managing production.
In this context, having an intelligent energy supervision system has become essential to anticipate imbalances between production and consumption, limit losses, and ensure the quality of the electricity supply.
A Customized Software Solution Offered by ACTIA Energy
ACTIA Energy has implemented a SCADA system enhanced with EMS modules | Energy Management System, specifically designed to meet the constraints of an island grid exposed to a high penetration of renewable energies.
This solution enables TEP to:
- Visualize load curves in real-time and compare them to daily forecasts,
- Automatically detect deviations in production or consumption,
- Generate monthly reports for performance analysis and decision support.
The system’s adaptability to local conditions, particularly to climate variability, makes it a strategic tool for securing the energy supply in Tahiti.
A Complex Technical Integration Challenge Successfully Managed
The success of this project relies on the ability to interface two heterogeneous software environments while adhering to the IEC 60870-5-101/104 communication protocol, standardized in the energy industry.
This hybrid architecture ensures interoperability between the different network components while guaranteeing operational stability since commissioning.
An Agile and Rapid Implementation
Leveraging an agile methodology and in-depth expertise in local challenges, ACTIA Energy was able to:
- Precisely identify the client’s functional needs,
- Select the most suitable technologies,
- Integrate and configure the solution within a limited timeframe,
- Support TEP’s teams in system adoption.
This deployment illustrates our ability to provide high-performance industrial solutions in demanding technical and geographical contexts.
Scalable Maintainability and Continuous Integration: A New Phase
Long-term Supervision
Beyond commissioning, the project is now part of an evolving maintenance strategy. The challenge is twofold: to ensure continuous system reliability while progressively integrating functional evolutions requested by TEP.
This monitoring is ensured by the LTR support team, responsible for:
- Analyzing client change requests,
- Coordinating developments with the software provider COPA-DATA,
- Internally testing new functionalities,
- Remotely integrating updates while respecting real-time operational constraints.
This continuous integration approach allows us to strengthen system robustness while creating a sustainable activity flow around energy supervision in Tahiti.
A Value-Generating Technology Partnership
The collaboration with COPA-DATA within this project fosters an enriching transfer of technological skills, both for our teams and for the end client. By cultivating a close relationship with the editor, we are able to:
- Adapt the zenon solution to the specific energy business requirements in an island environment,
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of deployed tools,
- Offer TEP a solution that is both scalable, sustainable, and highly customized.
ACTIA Energy, a Committed Player in the Island Energy Transition
ACTIA Energy’s expertise in supervising complex electrical grids today enables Tahiti to better anticipate and manage the variability of solar production. This is an essential step forward to secure the island’s energy supply, in a context where energy transition is more relevant than ever.
